Different Types of Men’s Shirts

Dress shirts play an essential role in any well-dressed man’s wardrobe. However, when it comes to describing the different types of men’s shirts, it requires a lengthy conversation about fabrics, colors, patterns, and more. There aren’t really “types” of dress shirts per se, so it’s a matter of taste as to which shirts you have in your wardrobe. It’s good to have a variety of dress shirts in your closet to accompany different business casual, formal, casual, evening and other outfits. Mohan’s Custom Tailors, the ultimate in bespoke men’s tailoring since 1972, would like to offer some advice on choosing the best shirt styles to go with your outfits.

One of the most recognizable differences between men’s shirts is the collar, so let’s focus our discussion on different types of men’s shirts on the types of collars and when you would wear them.

  • Forward Point Collar – One of the most traditional and easily recognizable collars is the forward point. It has a narrower distance between the two collar points when buttoned and a smaller enclosure for the tie know. The classic tall-point goes great with any formal wardrobe.
  • Button-Down Collar – The button-down collar is incredibly commonplace and surprisingly versatile. A well-made button-down collar shirt should have just the right amount of interlining to have a perfect roll when worn casually, but these shirts can add a prep-inspired look when paired with a tie.
  • Club Collar – Also known as Eton collars, rounded club collars were once considered a classic mainstay of a man’s wardrobe in the early 20th century. These collars are a great twist on the traditional shirt.
  • Deep Cutaway Collar – If you prefer fuller tie-knots, the deep cutaway collar is the shirt for you. It’s a larger collar with a very pronounced spread, perfect those occasions when a bit of “peacocking” is called for. These collars look great when done in a contrasting shade of white to the color of the rest of the shirt.
